To apply goto: LIGHTS ON VETERANS
Lights on Veterans is a program that was initiated by the Mayor of Patchogue Paul Pontieri to HONOR VETERANS in and around Patchogue and Suffolk County. The Mayor approached the VFW to help with the program, and the Senior Vice Commander Dave Rogers gladly took on the task of making this program a reality.
Initially the program was going to involve placing plaques on the lights posts to honor these veterans, but this was found to be too expensive so the plans had to be redone. Working with Susan Henke Brinkman (Village Trustee) they came up with a plan to install stones around the light posts.
Those wishing to HONOR VETERANS can buy a 12×12 stone to place around the Village in that veterans name. These stones will include the veterans name, rank and branch of service as well as the family, person or business that dedicated the stone. Those dedicating the stones will also have an option of adding additional information such as a medal the veteran received, a war they served in, or a unit they where with.
Besides the stones being placed around the village, individuals or businesses can purchase or contribute to corner stones that will be places at the Four Corners dedicated to the Branches of Service. These stones will be 2′ x 2 1/2′ colored stones that will display the branch of service in their colors.
The great part of this program is it is not only honoring veterans, but also helping them as the money raised through the program will go to support the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2913, American Legion Post 269 and AMVets Post 111 and their programs to help veterans.
